Probes, templates and gauges for toy mechanical safety
A set of accessibility probes, head probes, templates and inclination gauges used to check toys for entrapment, accessibility and shape hazards during mechanical and physical safety testing.
To determine whether any part or component of a toy can be contacted by the probe. The probe simulates the finger of the infant or child touching the accessible points or edges of a toy, which may then be subject to tests of sharp points or sharp edges. Accessibility probes are designed for two age groups: Probe A for 0-36 months
Probe B for 37-96 months

Simulate the human body (small head) testing module for opening the mouth
Dimension: 127*99*137MM(L*W*H)
Weight:2.43kg
Testing Standards
ASTM F963
A probe with the following
dimensions were chosen to achieve a perimeter of approximately 380 mm:
a: 96 mm;
b: 136 mm;
e: 40 mm.
When the cord attachment points are close to one another, it is easy to insert this probe with its main axis (see Figure A.1) perpendicular to the toy. If the perimeter of the cord is greater than 380 mm the probe can be inserted.
If the cord attachment points are further apart it is easier to insert the probe with its main axis parallel to the toy. In this case, to insert the probe, the distance between the toy and the cord must be at least 96 mm.
The dimensions at which the insertion of the probe becomes possible with the probe’s main axis parallel to the toy are as follows:
1) Perimeter of the probe: 380 mm;
2) width of the probe: 96 mm.
Therefore, if a rectangle with a perimeter of 380 mm and two sides of 96 mm is used, the other two sides shall be 94 mm long.
This test aims to assess whether or not the head of a child can fit through a fixed loop.
CEN/TR 13387:2004 has been used as the source for the appropriate head dimension for children of less than 3 months
This probe is 96 mm in width, has two hemispherical ends with a radius of 48 mm, and, as a consequence, a short flat side “e” which is 28 mm in length. The total perimeter of the probe is therefore 357 mm.
Since the limit of 380 mm, specified in EN 71-1 as the maximum perimeter of a noose, has been effective in preventing strangulation, the probe dimensions in Figure A.1 were changed to achieve the necessary values for the development of the test method for the perimeter of cords and chains.
Procedure
Probes C and D should be inserted first, and then you should check to see if they stick out past the opening by more than 100 mm. Without adjusting the direction during insertion, place the probes at the position that is the most difficult.
Testing for head and neck entrapment is done using probe C.
Application
Activity Toys with fully accessible apertures that are 600 mm or higher above the ground or any other surface that is large enough to support a child must be evaluated using a probe.

Product Description
Simulate the human body(small head) testing module for opening the mouth
Head Probe C (EN71-8)
Dimension: 127*99*137mm(L*W*H)
Weight: 2.43kg
Conforms to EN71-8
Procedure
Position the “B” portion of the test template between and perpendicular to the boundaries of the opening,
Observe whether the template fits within the boundaries of the opening or whether it cannot be inserted to its full thickness Determine whether the opening is accessible or not accessible.If the test template can be inserted to a depth greater than the thickness of the template (45 mm) when tested under:
apply the “A” portion of the test template, so that its center line is in line with
the center line of the opening. Ensure that the plane of the test template is parallel and applied in line with the opening.
Product Description
This template is used for assessing partially bound and V-shaped openings for head and neck entrapment
It is used to test the evaluation of template to head and neck sick into parts of closed V type open.
The EN 71 Test Probes & Templates is designed and made in India by Ramp Impex, New Delhi, and supplied to laboratories across India.
